I have been a voracious reader since childhood, for which I have been ever grateful to my sister. She gave me my first book.. and still suggests me the books to read. After I became busy with studies, I sorta lost the habit .. but ever since life became greener
, crosswords has been my favourite hangout.. and reading completely filled up my leisure time. Just a summary of the books I have read.
- Memoirs of a geisha : This book paints a picture about the life of a geisha, in a simple manner, that you can see the story move in front of your own eyes. The reader is first introduced to a nine-year-old girl, Chiyo, who lives in a fishing village with her father, her dying mother and her sister, Satso. After her mother dies, she and her sister are taken away to Kyoto by a wealthy man ,who she assumed would adopt her. Instead she is sold to a geisha house, the Nitta okiya and separated from her sister. The story proceeds to talk about her encounters with Hatsumomo, who sees in her someone who might replace her as the daughter of the okiya in future. Hatsumomo makes her life miserable and puts a barrier to all her prospects of becoming a geisha. Chiyo, having lost all hope, meets the Chairman who inspires her to face whatever comes in her path and she tucks the handkerchief he gifted her in her pocket, which she believed was lucky. The story goes on to describe how she becomes a successful geisha, after taking the apprenticeship of Mameha, another well-known geisha .. and reader is curious till the end to find out if the Chairman reciprocated her love.
